Transitional Year Program
TRANSITIONAL YEAR CURRICULUM
Program Requirements are met by the following core curriculum:
- General Surgery………………………………………………….. 8 weeks
- Internal Medicine Inpatient………………………………………..8 weeks
- Ambulatory care (Medicine, Family Medicine, or Pediatrics) ..4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine……………………………………………...4 weeks
The core curriculum above provides 24 weeks of clinical disciplines that offer fundamental clinical skills. The requirement for 4 weeks of ambulatory care and 4 weeks of emergency medicine is also met.
Electives are available for the remaining 24 weeks. The electives are divided into 2 groups.
Group A consists of 5 4-week blocks selected from the following list
- General Surgery
- Internal Medicine Inpatient
- Emergency Medicine
- Surgical ICU
- Medical ICU
- Pediatrics Inpatient Wards
- Pediatrics-ICU
- Pediatrics-Neonatal ICU
- Pediatrics-Emergency Medicine
- Pediatrics-Nursery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Head and Neck Surgery
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
- Urology
- Neurosurgery
- Obstetrics/Gynecology
- Anesthesiology
- Trauma Surgery
- Family Medicine Wards
- Dermatology
- Psychiatry Emergency Medicine
- Ophthalmology
Group B consists of one 4-week block selected from the following list
- Radiology
- Pathology
- Research
- Public Health
- One of the above listed rotations from Group A
The individual schedules are developed from a detailed questionnaire that allows the future resident an opportunity to rank the services in order of preference. The Transitional Year Program Director is ultimately responsible for ensuring that each TY Resident meets the requirements for the “Clinical Base Year” as dictated by the respective specialty program requirements (ie. Anesthesiology).
